Institutional Research

In this post i am going to be looking at how successful the Thriller genre is in comparison to other popular film genres.

To begin my research i first looked at the market share for different film genres from the years 1995-2014. These are summarised in the table shown below:

As you can see from this Comedy is clearly the most popular genre making $39,056,562,590 at that box office. If you go down to number 5 you will find the thriller genre.  The genre made $15,203,228,814 at the box office in this period. If you look at how much the drama genre made at the number 4 spot in this table you can see that there is a big jump between the amount of the money which both of the genres made at the box office. There is a difference of approximately $14,060,476,562. The thriller genre have a 6.33% share in the market. I would say that the thriller genre sits in the middle of the market in terms of its share of the market for films. I think that the reason there is a big gap between the thriller genre and the drama genre is the amount of movies made in each of these genres. If you look at the films made in the drama genre compared to the thriller genre you will see that there are 3,050 more films made in the drama genre than that of the thriller genre which is an indication a why there is a large gap. In summary i think that producers need to start making more thriller films in order for the thriller genre to get a bigger share of the market.
